3D Modeling & Printing Introduction

What is FDM 3D Printing?

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is a type of 3D printing where rolls of plastic filament are pushed through a heated nozzle (extruder) and laid down in successive layers.

Basic Onshape Objects

Makerbot Sketch (small)

The Makerbot Sketch (small) has a build platform of 150mm x 150mm or 5in x 5in.

The objects we print can not be larger than 5inches in any direction.

Instructions

Click here to open the OnShape website

  1. Create new document

 Name it "Name Cube"

2. Create a sketch

 

3. Click the "Front" sketching plane

 

4. Click "front" on the view cube to align to front

 

5. Draw a box (size does not matter right now)

 

6. Dimension

7. Zoom in using the SCROLL WHEEL

 

8. Use the Line tool to write the first letter of your first name.

Remember. You can end the line by pressing the ESCAPE key on your keyboard

9. Complete the sketch

 

10. Right click and drag to ORBIT to see the corner view

 

11. Extrude

12. Create a second sketch and select the side surface of your object

 

13. Draw the first letter of your last name

Remember. You can end a line by pressing escape

Note. You must be touching the square box

14. Remove the negative space from your second letter

15. Take a screenshot and submit it to google classroom

 

16. Export 3D file

17. Submit 3D File

Grading Rubric:

5pts Screenshot - Screenshot of your work is submitted. 

Object is zoomed in and takes up most of the workspace.

Object is shown from the corner; both the front and side are visiable.

5pts STL file - .stl file is attached in google classroom.
